The next meeting will be on Sunday November 6th at Garth Russell’s place in Standish.  He has already sent out directions via email so I won’t repeat them here.

Garth will be brewing an all-grain batch of Scottish ale using the brew-in-a-bag method.  Brew day starts at 10:00 AM.

If you can’t make it at 10:00 AM, the normal brew club meeting will be at 2:00 PM.

As usual, bring homebrew, if you have any ready, a glass, and something to throw on the grill if you wish.

Hope to see you on the 30th.

September 2011 Homebrew Club Meeting – OKTOBERFEST

September 2011 Homebrew Club Meeting – OKTOBERFEST

NEXT MEETING WILL BE AN OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION – SEP 24TH AT 6:00 PM AT ANDY SOUZA’S in South Portland.  Significant others and friends are welcome.

If you have an Oktoberfest or other KEGGED homebrew, feel free to bring it, unless you will be policing your own bottles.  I think Andy is trying to minimize the cleanup.  Also, as usual, bring a chair and a glass

See Andy’s Facebook posting

Hombrewed Oktoberfest beer will be served by The Portland Mashing Maineiacs homebrew club as well as Oktoberfestbier from the world famous Hofbrau Haus in Munich. We will have traditional Bavarian food, beer and music as well as a “gemutlichkeit,” feel. Dressing in Bavarian attire is strongly encouraged, Beer will be served in the traditional liter mugs. Please bring a liter mug if you can. Do not bring bottled beer. I’ll ask that people chip in for the keg in lieu of bring bottled beer. Feel free to bring sauaages for the grill or other snacks.

Hope to see you on the 24th!

-Chuck

Another Topic for Discussion – Portland Brew Festival – Sep 3-4, 2011

Another Topic for Discussion – Portland Brew Festival – Sep 3-4, 2011

Is anyone interested in participating?  Details below from Mak Sprague…

Saturday, Sept 3rd, Noon-3:30pm and 5-8:30pm —- Sunday, Sept 4th, Noon-3:30pm

The Portland Company Complex, 58 Fore Street, Portland, 04101

6,000 total attendees, 25+ brewers, 75 varieties of beer, cider and mead

Compared to the Maine Brewers we have more brewers (& out-of-state brewers), the same number of attendees but 2x the space, no live music, and homebrewing.

Being a cider and beer home brewer myself, I have dedicated about 20% of the floorplan to homebrewing.  Maine Brewing Supply will be helping to create displays and facilitate live brewing demonstrations.  I will be trucking in the tractor-powered cidering equipment my father and I built from scratch.

I believe that by participating in the event, homebrew clubs will benefit by: (1) raising awareness of your club and homebrewing in general through direct interaction with thousands of people, (2) venue for a club brewing event, and (3) establish and strengthen connections with commercial brewers.

Having discussed this with many homebrew clubs (and commercial brewers), I believe we have a path to pouring homebrew recipies at future shows: (1) Establish relationships with commercial brewers.  (2) Establish a homebrew competition to occur summer 2012. (3) Get commercial brewers to put their name on certain varietal competitions, such as the “Shipyard Ale Award” or the “Alagash Belgian Award”.  (4) These brewers, especially the large ones, participate in the GABF out west, which includes the Pro-Am competition.  If we bring 200-300 beers to these guys and make it easy for them to choose, we’ve gone most of the way to making this a reality.

March 2011 Meeting Notes

March 2011 Meeting Notes

– Club brew day was another smashing success.  We brewed 10 gallons each of a Czech Pilsner and a Dunkelweizen, and 5 gallons of a Pre-Prohibition Pilsner.

– We’ll decide how to distribute the final product, i.e., bottling or kegging.

– Brian F. suggested a cookout club meeting this summer (at his place maybe) where we drink some of the beer we brewed in March.

– The club malt order was finalized.  Thanks to everyone helping to make the process go smoothly.

– NEED A VOLUNTEER TO HOST THE APRIL MEETING.  We forgot to discuss THE LOCATION OF THE APRIL MEETING.  If you would like to volunteer to host the April brew club meeting, please send an email to the distribution or post a comment.

– If you have any other comments, please post them.  I did not take very good notes this month, and we were all pretty (happily) busy with brewing and the malt order.

Greg Norton created a signup sheet at following link:  http://bit.ly/fMr0mp.  Click edit and enter your info in the spreadsheet.

Please sign up for only full bags (55 lbs.)  If you want less than that amount, go ahead and fill in the spreadsheet and try to find someone willing to split a bag with you.  Andy Souza or Chuck Warner will place the order after the next club meeting and receipt of payment in full in advance (at next meeting).

Nathan Sanborn of Rising Tide Brewing (http://www.risingtidebrewing.com/) has kindly volunteered to accept the malt delivery from North Country, and we will arrange a couple of dates/times for pickup.  If you are splitting a sack of grain with someone, you will need to make arrangements to split the malt after pickup.
