Club Brew Day on May 20th

Club Brew Day on May 20th

The next club meeting will be a brew day on Sunday, May 20th at Andy Souza’s house. Brew day will run from 10:00 AM until 4:00 or 5:00 PM, but if you are not brewing feel free to show up at your convenience. Andy, Chuck, and Garth are planning to brew Oktoberfest biers. There is probably room for one other setup if anyone wants to brew with us.

If you like, bring something to throw on the grill, or chips, pretzels or other snacks.

ALSO, PLEASE NOTE… In appreciation to Nathan and Rising Tide Brewing for helping us out with the club malt order, I would like to suggest that everyone bring a couple bottles of Rising Tide beer. THANK YOU, NATHAN!!

Of course, please feel free to bring some of your own homebrew as well.

Lastly, anyone entering the club homebrew competition can drop-off their entries and entry fee with Chuck on May 20th if convenient.

Club Malt Order

Club Malt Order

As discussed at the last couple meetings, we will be submitting a club malt order again this year.  The 2012 North Country Malt catalog is linked below.  Catalog updated on 3/29/12.  We need to order a minimum of 12 bags to get the prices shown in this catalog, and it looks like we get a further discount if we order > 2000 lbs. (> 36 bags).

2012 North Country Malt Catalog – posted 29-Mar-12

When I talked to the North Country rep earlier today they urged us to get our order in as soon as possible.  I guess North Country only takes orders from homebrew clubs who have ordered with them within the past 12 months, and our last order was about 1 year ago.

I created a signup spreadsheet on Google Docs at the following link.  Please check out the catalog and signup within then next week, say by 4/4.  If you want to split a sack of malt with someone, signup for a half-sack and send out an email.  This method worked out pretty well last year.

I would like to call-in the order by Friday, April 6th, or early the following week.  Like last year’s order, to avoid getting stuck holding the bag (of malt), I will not include your malt in the order unless I have received your payment by the date I place the order.  You can mail or drop payment by my house.        -Chuck Warner

Next Homebrew Club Meeting – Feb 26, 2012

Next Homebrew Club Meeting – Feb 26, 2012

The next meeting will be on Sunday Feb 26th at 2:00 PM at Chris Falk’s house.  Look for an email with address and/or directions as the meeting gets closer.

As usual, bring some homebrew or commercial beer to share and a glass, or just come to socialize and talk about beer and brewing.

Notes from previous meeting / Agenda for next meeting:

Next club brew day is planned for March 25th at Andy Souza’s place, starting around 10:00 AM and continuing well into the afternoon.  Chuck and Andy will be brewing Oktoberfest biers.   Suggest others brew an Oktoberfest as well so that we have a variety to sample / judge in the Fall.  All are welcome to show up at your leisure to help with or observe the brewing.  Let’s discuss details and who will be brewing at next meeting.

Club-Only Competition planned for April or May.  Andy Souza to register the event with BJCP and possibly host the meeting.  The competition will be official but small to provide our club’s BJCP judges (Andy and Gregg) and other members with some additional judging experience.  All styles are welcome – basically whatever homebrew you have on-hand, in bottles, and would like to enter – is fine.  This is a great opportunity to get some written feedback on your beer.  To enter the competition, please get your entries (1-2 bottles per entry) to Chuck Warner no later than date TBA.   More details to follow.

– Possible club-sponsored competition in conjunction with Portland Brew Festival in September 2012.

– Trip to Valley Malt in Hadley, MA sometime next summer.  Any interest in making an overnight pilgrimage to check out Valley Malt and surrounding breweries or brewpubs?

– Other suggestions welcome for agenda

Next Homebrew Club Meeting – January 29, 2012

Thanks to all who attended the Jan 8th meeting.  We had a good turnout and some flavorful brews for the first meeting of the year.

Meeting Notes from Jan 8th:

–          Now the holidays are past, we decided to get back on our normal meeting schedule – the last Sunday of the month.  Next meeting will be Sunday, January 29, 2:00 PM at Novare Res Bier Café in Portland.  http://novareresbiercafe.com/

–          We are planning a club brew day for the end of March.  Location to be confirmed, but likely at Andy Souza’s home in South Portland.  We generally agreed to brew Pilsners or similar styles like American Pils or Helles with possible variations on type of hops, to be discussed further at next couple of meetings.  Tentatively, the following folks will bring brewing rigs:  Andy Souza, Gregg Carine, Garth Russell, and Chuck Warner.

Hope to see you at Novare Res on January 29th.
